Sit down with an experienced, local poet on the pinnacle day of love. You’ll learn what goes into writing a sonnet – Shakespeare’s favorite form of poetry. Then, you’ll flex your creative skills in a small-group setting by exploring why your romantic (or platonic) relationship can be so infatuating. Bring your girlfriend, your husband, or even your bromance! Valentine’s Day is a day to throw every word at the wall and hope at least 14 lines stick!
Full Outline:
Introductions - 15 minutes
Meet the other writers and share your history with creative writing.
Rules of a Sonnet - 30 minutes
Read over one of Shakespeare’s sonnets, discuss the overall meaning, and identify what makes it a true sonnet.
Brainstorm - 15 minutes
Writers will pick a specific person in their life that they love and brainstorm what parts of them they love the most.
Writing Time - 45 minutes
By using a structure organizer and the rules discussed previously, writers will work individually on a poem. Our poet will be open to questions during this time to help anyone who is stuck.

Before ending the class, writers will have the ability to share what they’ve came up with.
